It’s an immense golden sand beach, nearly 14 kilometers in length. The beach is surrounded by mountains, which contribute to its wild and secluded appearance, and the sea here is open and subject to strong currents.

Given its length and the impressive landscape that surrounds it, El Cofete is ideal for long walks along the shore or for hiking in the surrounding area. The nearby mountain trails offer spectacular panoramic views of the beach and the ocean.

Moreover, both the beach and its surroundings are habitats for many species of birds and marine fauna, making it an excellent place for nature observation, especially at dawn or dusk.

If you are fond of photography, the landscape of El Cofete, with its vast expanses of sand combined with the ocean waters and the mountains, will seem like a true paradise; you will find it hard to stop taking photos 😉

View of the beach looking east

How to Get There

El Cofete is located in the Jandía Natural Park, in the municipality of Pájara, south of the island of Fuerteventura. Access to the beach is through a dirt road that starts from Morro Jable. Although the journey has its difficulties, the views and the experience of reaching one of the most impressive beaches in Europe are more than worth it.

There is no direct public transportation to El Cofete beach, so the best option is to rent a car (preferably a 4×4, as the road can be challenging in some parts). The route from Morro Jable to the beach parking is just over 20 kilometers, but it can easily take up to 50 minutes to 1 hour to get there, as you have to cross the mountain range that divides the Jandía peninsula in two.

Dirt road to the beach

What to Do There

El Cofete is such an impressive beach that the best thing you can do there is enjoy the view and walk on its sand. Take the opportunity to spend a quiet day, totally away from the noise and hustle of the city.

Even if you are not into photography, we assure you that you will want to take tons of pictures.

Explore the surroundings of the beach. In addition to the spectacular viewpoint mentioned before, the Cofete cemetery, located next to the beach parking, at the edge of the sand and surrounded by a small stone wall, will certainly grab your attention.

Walking along the beach from the parking lot towards the east, you can reach the Islote de Cofete or Islote de las Siete Viudas, which divides the beach into two areas (Barlovento to the east and Cofete to the west), and continue to the far east of the beach, also known as Punta de Playa Larga.

At the opposite end of the beach is the Roque del Moro, which possibly offers the most spectacular view of the beach. At low tide, there are small natural pools in the rocks in this area.

Roque del Moro

Just over 2 kilometers away from the beach is the small village of Cofete, where there is a restaurant. In addition to the wind, strong currents and waves are common, so be really cautious.

Being an isolated and very large beach, there are no specific restrictions that prohibit the presence of pets on the beach. However, if you decide to go to the beach with your dog, act responsibly: make sure it does not bother other visitors and pick up its excrement so that the beach remains clean.

El Cofete Beach at sunset

We hope that with this description you are eager to discover this and other wonderful beaches about which you can find a lot of information in the app. And, if you already know El Cofete, do not forget to share your experience with other app users!

El Cofete

Pájara

Don’t forget all the information about these beaches and thousands more in iPlaya.
